The burned out storage facility at Parkvilla FC

Navan soccer club's facilities vandalised and burned

Navan club Parkvilla have had their facilities vandalised again this week after a storage facility at the club's pitch was burned this week, but officials have pledged to keep trying to provide an outlet for young people.

'This latest act of vandalism is difficult to take because those responsible are now boasting about their deeds,' commented a club official.

'We have had to cope with fires being lit on our pitches, glass broken in our goalmouths and lights broken.

'We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supportive neighbours and to tell those responsible that this sick behaviour will not deter us from providing sporting facilities to all youngsters, including them if they wish to change their ways,' the official added.

This weekend Parkvilla FC are putting on a display of their history in a exhibition that will be launched on Friday night and will fetaure old photos and reports covering soccer in Navan, some going back to the 1940s.

Material from the Meath & District League and North Eastern Counties Schoolboys League will also ne featured.

'There is a great buzz around the club because of this and our schoolboy awards are also taking place on Sunday,' added the club official.

'We also have plans to start improving our schoolboy pitches.

'We cater for hundreds of children on grass and artificial surface and hope to expand that facility.

'You can imagine what it was like for us to discover that that some youngsters from the locality had set fire to the portacabin holding nets, flags, paint, training poles and a pitch marker on Tuesday evening.

'We know that the majority of our neighbours appreciate the efforts we are making to keep our youth occupied and out of harms way and we will be strong in our efforts to get over this latest attack,' he added.

Photos show the burned out store and some of the Parkvilla teams that were in finals last week - u-12, u-14 and u-15 as well as Parkvilla official Eddie Starrs at the launch of the weekend memorabilia exhibition.

You can visit Claremont Stadium tomorrow evening at 8pm for the opening of the exhibition - well worth a visit.
