Elizabeth Morland at the u-20 European Championships today

National record at u-20 Euros for Morland

Cushinstown athlete Elizabeth Morland was in action today at the European Athletics u-20 Championships in Grossetto (Italy) where she completed the event at about 5pm.

The Meath woman was edged out of the medals, but set a national record as she finished in fifth position overall on 5,801 points with the winner Alina Shukh (Ukraine) taking gold on 6,381 points.

Morland started well this morning in the 100m hurdle and she was in second place on 987 points behind Holly McCarthy (Great Britain) 988 points.

In the high jump Morland picked up 916 points, but dropped to sixth overall as the Ukraine athlete took over at the top of the table.

She lost further ground in the shot and dropped to 10th overall, but made up some ground in the 200m and moved up to seventh position.

She stayed in contention for a medal in the long jump and then moved up to fifth after the javelin.

Morland then kept that position in the final event, the 800 metres and set that new Irish record in the process.
