Sun shines on Bohermeen Road Race

Patrick Brandon Somba won the 31st Patrick Bell memorial road race today with the laurels for the ladies event in the Nicky Phillips Memorial race going to Ciara Hickey from Dublin club Brothers Pearse.

Top Bohermeen athlete Darragh Rennicks was a close second to the impressive Somba.

Bohermeen AC hosted the event in memory of Patrick Bell and Nicky Phillips and it was the first time for 11 years that the event was held on a Sunday.

The crowds turned out in big numbers to cheer on the participants in what was described as a ‘fast’ course by some of the early finishers.

Runners and walkers will participated along with students and pupils from a number schools who had been invited.

The popular annual event commemorates the late Patrick Bell who tragically died following a traffic accident in 1985 at the age of 25.The event also commemorates the late Nicky Phillips who was the mile champion in Meath in the 1930s.

All the participants were treated to the legendary barbecue after all the running and walking and with the sun shining and the music playing over the public address system, spectators and athletes mingled after the race and enjoyed the atmosphere.

“I would like to thank all the sponsors including John Hogan Kitchens who is the main sponsor and Joe Leahy of Gala Stores for his support of the Nicky Phillips race for the ladies,” commented Bohermeen chairman Stephen Ball.
