Leinster aero model championships for ballivor this weekend

The Ballivor-based Royal County Aeromodellors Club will host the Leinster Aerobatic Championships  near Coolronan on Saturday morning.

According to club secretary, Bill Thompson from Dunshaughlin, staging the model aircraft championships is a great honour for the Royal County Aeromodellors Club, which will be hosting the provincial finals for the first time.

“The club was formed 10 years ago and we have a very active membership, this weekend's competition will a first for us and it will be staged at our airfield in the bog near Coolronan,” he said.

“While we will not have any members competing this weekend, it’s a great honour for the club to host such a prestigious competition and we will handle all the stewarding details.

“This will be a serious competition on Saturday with some of the model aeroplanes valued at up to €3,000, and there will be points available for places on the Irish team.

“We operate under the auspices of the Model Aeronautics Council of Ireland (MACI) and this allows members to enter official competitions in various classes leading on to national, European and world competitions, we are all looking forward to the event,' he added.

Saturday’s competition will be run by MACI and the competitors specialise in aerobatics to an international standard known as 'F3A’ under the FAI code of practice.
