Sad passing of trainer Peter Casey

Stamullen trainer Peter Casey passed away last night at the age of 82.

Although based in Meath, he was a serious and passionate supporter of the Dublin GAA team and was also one of the most popular characters in Irish racing.

Talking to the Meath Chronicle a few years ago and asked about the prospects of the Meath footballers he was quick to comment "They're no good, no good at all, it's Dublin all the way."

He enjoyed great success with the Stephen Curran-owned Flemenstar which won eight races, three at Grade One level, with Ashbourne jockey Andrew Lynch on board.

Six years ago this weekend, the late Mr Casey recorded his first Grade One success when Flemenstar won the Arkle Chase at Leopardstown, the first of a hat-trick of Grade One victories.

A post-race RTE interview with Tracy Piggott went viral when he commented "f...... sex tonight and everything and I'm going to go away for a week."

The late Mr Casey enjoyed some memorable winners both over jumps and on the flat.

The Basil Brindley-owned Blessyourpinksox was one high level performer on the flat while one he bred, Tubbertown Rose, also won on the flat.

Jack The Bus landed some big prizes over jumps. His last winner on the track was at Sligo in August of last year when Eight Till Late prevailed and that horse was also his last runner at Naas in November.

He was married to his wife Junie for more than 50 years.
