Hammer throwers go in search of gold

The five - Robert Higgins, Sarah Daly, Ciara Maguire, Zoe Mohan and Leo Anderson - earned the right to take part in the nationals following excellent performances in the Leinster Schools Track & Field Championships recently at Morton Stadium under the guidance of highly experienced hammer-throwing coach Paddy Hanily, a former national champion.

Higgins, who attends St Mary's, Edenderry continued his unbeaten run of success to take the title in the intermediate boys hammer event with a throw of 49.78m at Santry. Also in the intermediate girls category Daly put in a big performance to finish second. She attends Scoil Mhuire, Trim and she recorded a throw of 35.68.

Both Higgins and Daly set new personal bests with thier efforts and earned selection to the Leinster Schools Track & Field squad for the inter-provincial Tailteann Games which take place at Santry on Saturday, 24th June.   

The senior girls hammer event in the Leinster Schools Track & Field Championships were dominated by the group with Maguire representing Scoil Mhuire, Trim claiming the title with a throw of 49.43 with Mohan of Sacred Heart Drogheda, taking silver with a personal best performance of 40.13m. Mohan also claimed silver in the discus with an effort of 34.69m.    

Anderson who was representing Athboy Community School, claimed the Junior Boys title in the hammer with an impressive personal best performance of 41.75m.

Also in action in the Leinisters and narrowly missing out on progression to the national championships, were Laura Cunningham (Eureka, Kells) and Caoimhe Rowe (Boyne CS).
