Disappointment for Nigel in The Voice final

Weeks of blind auditions, battles and live shows culminated tonight when the winner of the Voice of Ireland was finally crowned. Each contestant performed two songs but there could only be one winner and the voting public got behind their champion and catapulted Michael Lawson to the top.

The final four opened the Grand Final opened with a rendition of Take That’s These Days.

Nigel Connell (42) from Athboy is a seasoned performer and has worked in the music industry for many years his first song on the show was The One by Dublin’s Kodaline, a band who first appeared on the same stage as 21 Demands in You’re a Star!

Michael Lawson brought Bressie to the meat packing factory he works in, in Clones, which Kathryn Thomas felt was like a weird image from Breaking Bad! Michael’s first song was Superman by Five for Fighting.

Finglas’ Laura O’Connor was up next with Lush Life by Zara Larsson, she took her coach Rachel to her workplace during the week – perfume shop Equivalenza at the Jervis Centre.

Kelesa Mulcahy and her coach and childhood friend Kian Egan went back to Sligo this week to hang out together. Kelesa teaches gymnastics and her students joined her on stage for her performance of Downtown by Macklemore. Kian is so proud of her he broke down when he gave his comments! Quick someone give that man a hanky!

Nigel put in a stomping performance for his second song of the night with The Wings’ track Live and Let Die. Michael’s favourite song of the series was 7 Years by Lukas Graham which he felt was the turning point for him in the competition. Laura’s second performance was a song from her Blind Audition - Yours by Ella Henderson. And finally Kelesa took to the stage to perform Sax by Fleur East, Kian feels like the show has never seen a performer like Kelesa!

There was lots of entertainment while the public voted. Nicky Byrne performed his Eurovision track Sunlight and Eoghan McDermott showed off his dance moves and rap credentials.
