70 events across meath for heritage week

Join up to 200 drummers at Knowth Passage Tomb, learn how to photograph a monument, explore Kells by moonlight, take a tour of Martry Mill, learn about the tradition of currach building in the Boyne Valley, enjoy a walk on Girley bog or take part in a children’s treasure hunt at Trim Castle - these are just some of the activities you can engage in during Heritage Week in Meath.
National Heritage Week 2015 takes place from from Saturday 22nd to Sunday 30th August, with over 70 events taking place throughout the county. Many of the events are run by local community and voluntary groups, to promote awareness and share a growing pride in our national heritage.
Among the events will be a talk and demonstration on Hedgerows by John McKeon of Hedgelaying Ireland in the Moynalty Steam Threshing Museum at 2pm on 23rd August.
Walking tours will take place on The Hill of Ward, Athboy at the location of UCD School of Archaeology’s excavations on Saturday 23rd August from 11am to 2pm and on the Hill of Slane from 22nd to 29th at 2pm.
An exhibition of photographs of Megalithic Art by Con Brogan will be on display in Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre from 22nd to 30th August from 9am to 6pm, while he will give a workshop on 'How to Photograph a Monument’ at theCentre on 23rd August at 11am.
A presentation of Archaeological Geophysics on the Hill of Belsaw will be given by Kilberry Amenity and Heritage Group, at Wilkinstown National School on Sunday 30th August from 14:30.
'Our Kells Monuments’ will be discussed by Dr Peter Harbison at St Columba’s Church, Kells on 22nd August at 4pm.
There will be free Guided Tours and Audio Visual Shows on the Hill of Tara on 23rd and 30th August from 10 to 5pm.
A talk on 'The French Connection- Some possible influences on de Lacy Castles in Ireland’ will be given by Paul Duffy of Grassroots Archaeology at the OPW HQ, Trim on 25th August at 4pm.
Dr Stephen Mandal will give a talk on 'The BlackFriary Community - What does Community mean?’ at the OPW HQ, Trim on 27th August at 4pm.
There will be free guided tours of Trim Castle on 23rd and 30th August from 10am to 5pm.
Free Guided tours of Newgrange and Knowth will take place on 30th August from 9am to 5pm while there will be free admission to Cairn T, Loughcrew Cairns from 22nd to 30th August from 10am to 5pm.
Drawing Lessons with Richard Moore on the theme of Megalithic Art at Knowth will be given on 27th August at 3pm.
'Loughcrew- an Archaeology of the Otherworld’ will be the subject of a talk by Dr Robert Hensey on 22nd August from 3pm.
'What it said in the Papers : Our Locality 1750-1900’ will be presented at Teach Raithneach Heritage and Cultural Centre, Grangegeeth, Collon on 28th August at 8.30pm.
There will be Children’s Treasure Hunts at Trim Castle on 30th August at 12pm, 2pm and 3pm.
Those who fancy a temporary Tattoo can get 'The Loughcrew Tattoo’ incorporating Neolithic designs at the Car park, Loughcrew Cairns on 23rd August from 3 to 5pm.
Fun family activities, a picnic, traditional music and dance will take place in Scurlogstown Heritage Park, Trim on 30th August from 2pm.
You can 'Beat Your Drum for National Heritage Week’ at Knowth by joining John Bowker (Tribal Spirit Drumming) and up to 200 drummers at Knowth on 22nd August at 4pm.
The annual Feis Teamhra celebrates Tara with music and poetry from Susan McKeown, Paul Muldoon and friends, including Colum Mc Cann and Sinéad Morrissey. This takes place at the Hill of Tara on 30th August at 3pm. The Army band will give a concert at Trim Castle on 23rd August at 2pm.
There will be Fun in Balrath Woods on 30th August from 2pm and The Kells Heritage Town Free Audioguide and App will be available in Kells on 22nd August.
An Open Day will take place at Macetown Mill on 22nd August from 9am to 6.30pm and there will be an open day at the recently restored Annesbrook Mill on 30th August from 2pm.
A walk through 'The Industrial Town of Kells’ with Lucy O’Reilly and Joe Rourke will take place on 23rd August at 2pm.
There will be boat trips on the Boyne Canal at Sea Lock, Oldbridge on 23rd August from 2pm.
You can step back in time with a Victorian Garden Walk at the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre on 29th August at 2.30pm.
'Meath’s Changing Landscape’ will be the subject of a talk by Michael Creegan at Navan Education Centre on 29th August at 2pm.
The Spire of Loyd will be open to visitors on 23rd and 30th August from noon to 4pm.
There will be Living History displays every hour from 11am to 4.45pm at the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre on 23rd and 30th August.
Medieval Trim Tours starting at the Castle Car-Park will take place on 23rd, 26th and 28th August from 2pm to 3.30pm.
There will ne Bread-Baking and an Open Day at Martry Mill on 22nd August from 10 am to 5pm.
A talk on the History of Moynalty Graveyard will take place in Moynalty Credit Union Building on 28th August at 8pm.
A walk though Trim looking at sites connected to the revolutionary period 1913-23, commencing at the front of Castle Arch Hotel will take place on 30th August at 11am.
A Full Moon Walk of Kells will take place on 29th August at 9.30pm.
The History of Cruicetown Parish: 1190 - 1690 will be the subject of a talk and short tour at Cruicetown Cemetery, Nobber on 25th August at 7.30pm.
The Lady Well Fete at Slane takes place at Slane Castle on 23rd August from 1 to 6pm.
A commemoration of local man, Captain Arthur Preston, who was killed at Gallipoli in August 1915 and the other Meathmen who died at Gallipoli will take place at the Bowling Club, St Mary’s Church of Ireland Church, Kilmessan on 26th August at 8pm. On the same night in neighbouring Dunsany, John Donohoe and Mary Harrahill will deliver talks on Elizabeth, Countess of Fingall, founder of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association, in Horace Plunkett Hall at 8pm.
There will be a guided tour of Athlumney Manorial Village on 23rd August at 3pm and 27th August at 7pm.
An illustrated talk on Navan and its people during WW1 will take place in Navan Library on 25th August at 7pm.
A Heritage Walk or drive to sites of local interest in the Tailteann Donaghpatrick and Oristown areas with historian, Vincent Garvey will take place on 29th August at 3pm.
A talk and tour of the 1641 Julianstown Battle Site with historian and author Brendan Matthews will take place at 4pm on 22nd August.
An exhibition of winners and entries to the 'Medieval Buildings of Trim’ competition will take place at the OPW HQ, Trim
from 24th to 28th August from 10am to 5pm. A talk by Fr Sean McDonagh on St Columbanus on the 1500 anniversary of the saint’s death will take place in Ballivor Community Library on 28th August at 8pm.
A tour of Old Donore Cemetery will take place on 29th and 30th August from 10.30 am to 6.30pm.
A tour of Tara’s seven Holy Wells will take place on 22nd August at 3pm.
'50 years of Meath Travellers’ is a photographic exhibition celebrating the heritage of Meath Travellers over the last 50 years, which will take place on 24th August from 11.30 am to 4.30 pm in the Solstice Arts Centre.
'Tracing the history of the Syddan area from the 1600’s onwards’ is a talk which will be given in St David’s Church, Syddan on 30th August at 3pm.
The Battle of the boyne Visitor Centre will host a 'Walk in the footsteps of the Musketeers’ at the centre on 23rd August at 2.30pm.
See how the 17th century army troops were fed, clothed and cured of their battle wounds at The Sutlers Camp at the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre on 30th August from 11am to 4.30pm.
There will be free admission to the museum dedicated to the flax and linen industry at Kraft Kaffee, Oldcastle on 22nd, 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th, and 29th August.
Kiltale Farm will be giving butter making demonstrations on 28th August from 5pm to 8pm.
The Boyne Currach Centre will be holding an Open Day on 29th August from 10.30am.
Brian Keely from Bat Conservation Ireland will conduct a Bat Talk and Walk, starting at the Steam Threshing Museum, Moynalty on 23rd August from 7.30pm.
A breathtaking display of falcons, hawks and owls by Newgrange Falconry will take place on the Hill of Tara on 23rd August from 12.30pm to 4pm.
A Childrens’ Nature Walk will leave Teach Raithneach Heritage and Cultural Centre on 29th August at 10.30am.
A Wildlife Photography Talk by award winning photographer Andrew Kelly will take place in Ashbourne Library on at 27th August at 7pm.
A tour of IPCC’s Restoration Project on Girley Bog will take place at Causey Farm on 30th August, from 2pm to 5pm.
