New bog search for remains to begin

A new search of land at Oristown bog for the remains of Brendan Megraw, who disappeared in the 1970s, is to be undertaken by the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims Remains, starting next week.
A spokesperson for the commission said that a geophysical survey of an area of the bog, near Kells, was being planned.
The ground-penetrating rader examination will take place following a mapping of an area of the bog that has not, so far, been the subject of examination by the commission.
Asked whether the commission had new information about the site, the spokesperson said that the commission never carried out “speculative operations”.

The commission said that if any “anomalies” turned up during the geophysical survey, a decision would then be made as to whether to extend into a search using heavy machinery and guided by commission staff.
Brendan Megraw, from Belfast, disappeared in 1979 and was reported to have been shot by the IRA and his body buried at Oristown bog.
A number of examinations of Oristown bog in an attempt to locate Mr Megraw’s remains have already been made, the last of which was in 2010.
