Obituaries 27th september 2014

The death occurred peacefully in his 95th year of Thomas (Tom) Farrelly, Whitegate, Virginia, Co Cavan, in the loving care of his sons and daughters and a large family circle at his residence, on Sunday 7th September. Tom will be greatly remembered as a very hard working gentleman who worked up to his early 90s in delivering turf to many houses in Cavan and Meath. Tom also provided a recycling service for many years and was a pioneer in this area.

Deceased was born in 1919 in Whitegate, where he grew up, learning to play Irish music and became a skilled dancer in many dance halls around Ireland. In his early days, Tom worked as a postman providing for his large family of 10. He took a keen interest in music, dance and sport and his favourite was cycling and he won many races and competitions. Tom had a great devotion to Our Lady, and travelled to the Marian shrines in Lourdes, Medjugorje and Knock. The respect in which Tom was held was witnessed by the very large numbers of people of all walks of life who attended his wake, removal and funeral Mass.

A guard of honour was formed by members of Cavan Fianna Fail and public representatives also took part. The funeral Mass at St Matthew’s Church, Maghera, was concelebrated by Fr Dermot Prior and Fr Frank Kelleher. Fr Dermot spoke of Tom’s faith in God which was an example to his family and to his community. He said Tom worked hard as a husband, father and grandfather and left wonderful memories for all the family to cherish. Family members took part in all aspects of the funeral liturgy and symbols of his life were brought forward. Traditional music and favourite songs of Tom’s were also sung during the ceremony. Following the Mass, burial took place in Maghera cemetery.

Tom was predeceased by his wife, Gerty, and is survived by his daughters, Mary, Helena, Jocie, Rose, Ann, Kate; sons, Sean, Patsy, Ritchie, Tony; brother, Pat; grandchildren; great grandchildren and a large circle of friends.

 

Joan Campbell, Enfield

Joan Campbell, Dublin Road, Enfield, who has died, was a native of Poddle Park, Kimmage in Dublin, and was predeceased by her husband, Harry Campbell, in 1989.

Aged 73, she was daughter of the late Kitty and John Pender, and is now at rest with her late husband, her parents, and sister, Ann.

She is survived by her family, John, Cavan, Garry, Enfield, Susan Jordan, Ovens, Co Cork, Denise Weafer, Tallaght, Dublin, and Fiona Byrne, Poddle Park, Kimmage, extended family, relatives and friends.

The funeral took place from St Colmcille’s Church, Kells, to St Colmcille’s Cemetery.

Patrick Reynolds, Carnaross and Navan

The regretted death occurred on 2nd September last at Millbury Nursing Home of Patrick Reynolds, Troytown Heighs, Navan, at the age of 68.

A native of Jonesboro, Carnaross, Kells, he is survived by his wife, Margaret, son, Mark, daughter, Rosemary, all Troytown Heights; sisters, Carmel, Navan, and Kathleen, Dublin; brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

The funeral took place from St Oliver’s Church, Blackcastle, to Holy Family Cemetery, Carnaross.

Gerry Byrne, Navan

There was widespread sadness following the passing on 8th September last of Gerry Byrne, Clusker Park, Navan, at Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan.

Aged 70, he was a native of Altclough, Co Donegal.

He left his native Donegal in 1963 to work as a carpenter in Luton, England, where he married Maureen and remained for many years before they returned to Ireland and settled in Navan some 34 years ago.

Deceased worked for many years in the building trade in Ireland, and was more recently known as the caretaker at Blackcastle Shopping Centre until his retirement four years ago.

Gerry was best known for his love of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He had a keen interest in his grandson’s football matches and was a regular on the sidelines at many matches around the county. He was seldom seen out and about without Jack by his side. A great family man, he will be fondly remembered for his easy nature and great sense of humour, and will be sadly missed by all.

Gerry is survived by is wife, Maureen; son, Neil; daughters, Rachel, Tara and Majella, all Navan; daughter-in-law, Libby; daughters’ partners; grandchildren; great grandchildren; brother, Sean, Dublin, and sisters, Kathleen, Aine, and Sarah, all Donegal; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

The funeral Mass took place from St Oliver’s Church, Navan, to St Finian’s Cemetery.
