Spring cinema season opens at Solstice

The January blues can be blown away with a free screening of the animated film ‘Spirited Away’ at Solstice Arts Centre on Saturday 18th January. Adults and children alike can enter the mystical world of Studio Ghibli and join 10 year old Chihiro as she enters a magical land of spirits, witches and monsters! (Rated PG - parents should familiarise themselves with content before letting younger children attend).

‘Cinema at Solstice’ screenings take place at least once a month on a Wednesday at 7.30pm and the Spring Film Bundle offers four films for €18. This season kicks off on Wednesday 15 January with Arabic language film ‘Wadjda’ (2013). This is a heart-warming story about a young girl who decides to enter her school Koran recitation competition to win money for the green bike that has captured her imagination. It is the first Saudi Arabian feature to be directed by a woman and was one of The Guardian’s top ten films for 2013 (with English subtitles). On Wed 5 February, you can enjoy the classic ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ (1962). Widely considered to be one of the greatest ever films made, this movie is based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer-winning book and tells the story of Scout and her father Atticus who is a lawyer defending a young black man in racially divided 1930’s Alabama.

On Wednesday 5th March, there is bittersweet comedy with ‘Le Weekend’ (2013) starring Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Durcan as a middle-aged couple who take a trip to Paris for their 30th wedding anniversary and on Wednesday 9 April, get ready for some Irish soul with the early 90’s cult classic ‘The Commitments’(1991). Based on Roddy Doyle’s enduring comedy-drama, the film features an array of current stars including Glen Hansard and the Corrs!

This season you can also enjoy Matinee film ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ (1952) on Saturday 15 February.  Join Gene Kelly for one of the finest musical comedies ever made in this re-release of the technicolor masterpiece. Add this fifth film to your bundle for just €22!
