Jamie McGrath at his new club St Mirren in Scotland

St Mirren contract for Jamie McGrath

Athboy man Jamie McGrath has embarked on a new chapter in his soccer career by signing a two-and-a-half year deal for Scottish Premiership side St Mirren.

The 23-year-old Athboy man had opted to look for new horizons after his contract with Dundalk came to an end at the conclusion of the 2019 League of Ireland season.

There was an offer from Dundalk to stay at Oriel Park, but McGrath opted to look at his options and it it understood a number of other clubs were looking to sign him.

However, after talking to the Scottish club's representatives McGrath opted for St Mirrren who are based in Paisley outside Glasgow.

St Mirren have had their share of ups and downs over the years.

In 2013 they won the Scottish League Cup defeating Hearts 3-2 in the final, but in 2015 they were relegated before securing promotion back to the top flight.

St Mirren's next league game is against Steven Gerrard's title-chasing Rangers at Ibrox on Wednesday 22nd January - and McGrath could feature.

McGrath, started his soccer career with Athboy Celtic and had a spell with Cherry Orchard.

He joined St Patrick's Athletic before signing for Dundalk in January 2017 where he enjoyed a trophy-filled three seasons with the Co Louth club winning two Premier League titles, two EA Sports Cups and an FAI Cup and gained invaluable experience in European football.

A midfielder or winger McGrath has also been selected at schools, u-19 and u-21 levels for the Republic of Ireland.
