The workshop at Slane's Men's Shed.

Community invited to opening of Slane's Mens Shed on Saturday

This coming Saturday, 28th September, will see the official opening of Slane and District Mens Shed at Slane Industrial Estate by Minister for European Affairs, Helen McEntee, at 2pm.
This premises,  following three years of planning and  two years' construction, is designed to provide an outlet for older men who have some time on their hands. It will be open to men from Slane and all of the surrounding parishes. During their researches, the SDMS team identified that a large population of such men exists.
The premises comprises a well-equipped workshop, large recreation area, kitchen, computer room and a small fitness room.
The activities can be varied from having a cup of tea and a chat to becoming involved in workshop activities, or engaging in a wide range of recreational, craft or wellness activities.

John Deacon ,Chairman of SDMS stresses that  “whilst a small group of us have been involved in building the place, the activities will be in accordance with members wishes for their benefit and the benefit of the wider community -  this is just the beginning!”
The original idea began as a concept by Slane Community Forum. Eventually in December 2017 a premises was very generously provided at Slane Industrial Estate by the landlord, Noel Monaghan of MCM Engineering.

Pat Doyle, another founder, explains “ a small group of us auld fellas then engaged in a fairly arduous two- year programme to renovate this premises as workshop area and add another building for recreation and other activities.”
All of the activities were generously supported by a large number of individuals and organisations who provided donations, grants and a wide range of other supports.
The result is a well located , comfortable, well equipped, premises which, it is hoped, will support the activities and be of benefit to the local community.
Slane and District Mens Shed is open Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm . All are invited to come along and see the place, have a cuppa and a chat. All are also welcome at the official opening which is an open day for the community.
