Minister Helen McEntee talking with Jimmy Geoghegan after the full-time whistle at Pairc Tailteann

VIDEO: Minister takes Brexit break to see cousins help seal Meath promotion

Minister Helen McEntee took a break from Brexit to watch her cousins Shane and James help secure promotion for Meath to Division 1 of the National Football League at Pairc Taiteann today.

Whatever about the UK's protracted process on leaving the European Union, Meath have emphatically left Division 2 with a 2-12 - 0-11 victory over Fermanagh. The Royals can look forward to locking horns with the heavyweights next season with that NFL final against Donegal (who secured promotion after defeating Kildare) to look forward to next Saturday. And the Meath East TD was delighted with that decisive result and the performance of the team under the mentorship of uncle, Andy McEntee.

"It's a fantastic result for the guys, they played their socks off and as you can see the crowds came out and got behind them so it was brilliant. And of course my cousins Shane and James did well too but the whole team played great."

The Minister for European Affairs who is centrestage with the ever developing situation around the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the EU was happy to be able to take a break from all things Brexit at Pairc Tailteann but said all eyes would be fixed now on Westminster to see if Theresa May can get her deal with the EU through Parliament.

"We'll see what Theresa May does this week and if she puts the vote to them and if she doesn't we'll see what type of timeline we have then, but we'll have to see."

One timeline that won't be changing is that of next Saturday's NFL Final showcase of Meath and Donegal at Croke Park at 7pm.
