New Bridge opens

WATCH: New pedestrian and cycle bridge opened in Navan

Over 70 tonnes of steel and a kilometre of cable went into the construction of Navan's new €1million cycle and pedestrian bridge across the Boyne, which was officially opened thias morning, by the Mayor Navan, Cllr Jim Holloway.

The structure, which has been cantilevered onto 'New Bridge' at the junction of the Inner Relief Road and the Athlumney Road, is part of a major cycle and pedestrian route planned for the town.

The original bridge was built across the Boyne in 1755.

Despite the gale force winds of Storm Diana, the bridge was opened and blessed by Fr Declan Hurley Adm Navan and Rev John Clarke, Rector, Navan in the presence of the Mayor,  local councilors, Deputy Shane Cassells and Meath County Council CEO, Jackie Maguire.

Cllr Holloway said that in years to come today would be seen as an historic day for Navan.

"This is the first bridge ever built in Navan dedicated solely for pedestrians and cyclists."

He said it was a significant and essential part of the vision for the town - 'Navan2030.'

Navan Mayor Jim Holloway declares the bridge open

"From now on, pedestrians and cyclists will have the opportunity to cross in and out of Navan Town Centre, relaxed, safe and separate from vehicular traffic and hopefully with the time to at least say hello.
