The death occurred on Tuesday 24th May of Edward Carlos Plunkett, the 20th Baron Dunsany, of Dunsany Castle. Aged 71, Plunkett succeeded to the title on the death of his father, Lt Col Randal Plunkett, in 1999. He had been in ill-health in recent years. His grandfather, also Edward, was a noted writer and playwright, who encouraged the careers of writer Mary Lavin and poet Francis Ledwidge, and was a contemporary of Yeats and Gregory. Other prominent members of the Anglo-Irish family were St Oliver Plunkett, the martyr who was beatified in 1975, and Sir Horace Plunkett, the founder of the Co-operative Movement and Ireland's first head of the Department of Agriculture.
