Declan O'Rourke to headline September's Navan Folk Club

Navan’s Folk Club returns to The Lantern on Watergate Street  on Sunday 15th September with a collection of renowned and local artists. Now firmly established as one of Meath’s very best nights of music and arts, the Folk Club welcomes legendary songwriter and musician Declan O’Rourke to Navan. The line up also includes Steve Gunn from Brooklyn, New York, poet Peter Fallon, Colette Clinton, Anthony Cregan Saramai Leech, Oisin Leech and more.

“The Folk Club, known for fun as Joey Procida’s Folk Club, started in Beggys then moved to The Central and now continues its world tour of Navan to The Lantern” explains local musician and co-curator Oisin Leech who is one half of The Lost Brothers.

“It’s exciting to have artists like Declan and Steve coming to perform in Navan” continues Oisin. “We’ve been very lucky with the guests we’ve had over the years and I don’t know where you’ll hear better music anywhere in Ireland on a Sunday night.”

Declan O’Rourke who hails from Dublin has been an important figure on the Irish music scene since the release of his celebrated debut album “Since Kyabram” in 2004. Since then he has released superb albums and toured the world. Winning respect from other world famous artists he has been hailed by the likes of Paul Weller as one of his favourite songwriters who once said he himself wished he had written Declan’s timeless song “Galileo”.
More recently Declan released the excellent “Chronicles Of The Great Irish Famine” which included a collaboration with John Sheahan of The Dubliners. Declan himself is a supremely gifted guitarist and vocalist who has opened for the likes of Planxty and Bob Dylan and is known as one of the finest songwriters on the planet.

Steve Gunn from New York was recently hailed by Rolling Stone Magazine as “rock’s best kept secret”. His albums have been critically acclaimed and his live performances are not to be missed. This year’s release “The Unseen In Between” is a stunning album produced by Daniel Schlett in New York and received widespread praise from the press and fans alike. Having played guitar in Kurt Vile’s band over previous years Steve has now become an established solo artist.

“I found out about Steve Gunn from Harko who works in the post office in Navan who lent me a cd” explains Oisin. “ I instantly fell in love with the sound and the songs. Legendary singer John Prine was a postman so I trust Harko’s taste in music.”

Steve Gunn, a virtuoso guitarist and gifted singer and writer, is currently on a world tour. He brings his songbook to Joey Procida’s Folk Club at The Lantern on 15th September.

Also added to the bill are The Hinterland House Band which comprises of three Meath artists- poet Peter Fallon and sibling musicians Saramai Leech and Oisin Leech.
Their performance includes an interlude of songs, readings and talk. Peter Fallon is an award-winning poet and publisher the success of whose work has brought him around the world and who, in the words of the Sunday Times, is ‘one of Ireland's greatest literary talents’.
Saramai Leech, another exceptional singer-songwriter who, thanks to a recent EP and appearances at Other Voices and other venues, is a growing force. Her brother Oisin Leech of The Lost Brothers Will join Saramai and Peter. Lost Brothers have played internationally from Glastonbury to SXSW in Texas, to recently touring Australia.

Local Navan singer Colette Clinton will join Anthony Cregan for a set at this September’s Folk Club.

“Any time I’ve heard Collette sing the whole room hushes quiet to listen. She has a stunning voice.”continues Oisin. "The backroom in the Lantern is a brilliant space for music and I’m excited about the night.”

Colette is joined by one of Ireland’s best guitarists Anthony Cregan who has been performing professionally since his days with Little Palace and The Frogs.
