McGrane in top four finish
Kells man Damien McGrane produced the second lowest four round total at the KLM Open in Kennemer, Holland last weekend, but still had to settle for fourth place behind winner Simon Dyson from England, Peter Lawrie from Dublin and Swede Peter Hedblom after missing out on a place in the play-off by one stroke. Dyson equalled the course record with a dazzling seven under par 63 to secure a play-off spot, but McGrane was also in magnificent form with his final round of 64 leaving him just one shot adrift of the leading trio. McGrane might have been in contention and could have even won the event that was won by Darren Clarke last year, but for several missed birdie opportunities before sinking the 50-foot putt on the last to post a 64 and a 266 total. Navan Golf Club men's captain Seamus McCormack presented his prize last weekend following a thrilling couple of days action with Timmy Gaffney claiming the honours. After the first round, which was held the previous Sunday in blustery conditions, Gaffney held a four-shot lead after shooting a superb 63. Brendan Dowdall was in second place after a 67 and there was a tightly grouped pack behind the leading two. The top 54 and ties from day one lined up on Saturday in an attempt to win the big prize. Gaffney held his nerve to shoot a 69 for an overall winning score of 132. Dowdall finished second after adding a 72 to his opening 67. Jason Smyth's 75 gross was the best round of the day and enabled him to take the gross prize. The other prizewinners were Ray Reilly in third (140), Mark Geraghty in fourth (140) and fifth-placed Mike Nolan on 143. Vincent Tierney was sixth with 143, Noel McCabe was seventh (145) and Tom Boland eighth (145). Brian Brennan's 69 on the first day won him the leading qualifer prize while Alan Farrelly won the juvenile / student prize. Donal Geraghty won the past captain's prize and Joe Flannery won the committee prize.
