Officials on duty at the Dunshaughlin 10k this evening

Every second counts at dunshaughlin race

There was heartbreak for Westmeath athlete Mark Christie on Meath soil this evening - perhaps a good omen for the Royal County next Sunday in Croke Park - when the Mullingar Harriers man missed out on equalling a record by ONE second.

Christie won the Dunshaughlin 10km Road Race in 29mins and 22 seconds (see video clip of finish) with the record standing at 29.21 set by Noel Cullen in 2000.

The Meath crowd gave Christie great encouragement in the home straight but he just missed the record as he took first place ahead of Mick Clohisey with five seconds to spare.

Mark Kenneally Clonliffe Harriers was third with Dunboyne's Peter Somba in fourth.

However, the women made the cut with Lizzie Lee of Leevale finishing in 33m13s (55 seconds better than her record in 2013)

Barbara Sanchez Clonliffe Harriers was second and Charlotte Kearney Donadea, who won the Bohermeen 5k two weeks ago was third.
