Bringing Trim’s history to life: Meet the guide behind Púca’s ‘Beyond the Veil’ trail

From medieval legends and ancient mythology to the shadowy folklore of Samhain, Trim’s historic streets hold stories that have lingered for centuries. This Halloween, local tour guide Cynthia Simonet is inviting visitors to step beyond the familiar and uncover the mysteries woven into the fabric of the heritage town.

As part of Púca Festival 2026, Cynthia will lead Beyond the Veil: The Púca Trail, an atmospheric journey through Trim’s rich past, where ancient Celtic traditions, supernatural folklore and the magic of storytelling come together.

Running from 29th October to 1st November, Púca Festival celebrates Ireland’s deep-rooted connection to Halloween and Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival marking the transition from harvest into winter. Across Trim and Athboy, four days of music, entertainment and cultural experiences will shine a light on the traditions that have shaped Ireland’s relationship with this mysterious time of year.

For Cynthia, the trail offers an opportunity to peel back the layers of Trim’s history, looking beyond its imposing medieval landmarks to uncover the legends, secrets and lesser-known stories that give the town its distinctive character.

An experienced local guide, Cynthia has made it her mission to breathe life into Trim’s heritage, transforming its winding streets, historic ruins and picturesque landscapes into a tapestry of tales from times gone by.

Through her Medieval Trim Walking Tours, she takes visitors on a journey through the town’s fascinating past, while her themed walks delve into the mythology and folklore that have become intertwined with its landmarks.

One such experience, The Holy Grail of Knights and Monks, leads visitors through the tranquil expanse of the Porchfields towards the atmospheric ruins at Newtown, blending medieval history with local legends and tales that have endured through generations.

Cynthia has also taken part in Heritage Week activities, including Weeds & Wisdom, encouraging participants to pause, look closer at their surroundings and discover the unexpected stories hidden in the everyday landscape.

During a private walking tour of Trim with Cynthia, it quickly became clear just how much history lies beneath the surface. From fascinating details to intriguing local secrets, her stories revealed a side of the town that could easily escape even those who have lived in the area for years.

Her approach reflects the enduring appeal of experiences that go beyond dates and historical facts, offering visitors a more personal connection to the places they explore and the people who have shaped them.

Having grown up in Trim and remained in the heritage town ever since, Cynthia hopes to develop a team of local guides who can share their knowledge and passion for the area with visitors, ensuring its stories continue to be told for generations to come.

Her connection to the community extends beyond tourism. Cynthia also volunteers with Trim Family Resource Centre’s Walk & Talk programme, bringing people together for sociable walks along the River Boyne, where the town’s natural beauty, wildlife and heritage provide a backdrop for connection and conversation.

Through her guided tours and community work, she continues to find new ways to bring people closer to Trim’s history, landscape and living heritage.

For those joining Beyond the Veil: The Púca Trail, however, the town takes on a particularly enchanting character as Halloween approaches. With its medieval architecture, ancient legends and centuries-old traditions, Trim provides a fitting setting for an exploration of the folklore that lies at the heart of Ireland’s Halloween celebrations.

“We dress up and really get into character, tourists from America especially love it” says Cynthia.

“There is so much to be told about the town and the actors really do a great job at telling the story, too. Every year the same people work at the festival, so we have all really gotten to know each other.”
