Council explore roundabout safety improvement option

The Moat Road and Andy Connolly roundabout in Navan are being assessed to provide improved pedestrian safety along that section of the N51.

Councillors have been told that when the options have been assessed a Feasibility and Options report will be submitted to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), seeking approval and funding.

Cllr Eddie Fennessy said crossing the Moat Road is quite dangerous and the area has a high pedestrian footfall made up of local residents, public transport users, workers from the Retail Park and the Industrial Estate at Mullaghboy and the students from St Patrick’s Classical School.

“The council are constrained by the parameters set out by the government when trying to access funding for large scale infrastructural projects. To my frustration, I understand that. However, my call for the development of pedestrian safety infrastructure in this area has been a long one.

“A controlled pedestrian crossing point was installed two years ago. However, it is not connected to a continuous footpath to the Retail Park which is where most of that pedestrian traffic is headed.

“TII have been looking at this for over two years now. It is high time they published their plan. Doing so would allow the council to access the funding required for implementation, and ultimately, enhance the safety of motorist and pedestrian alike," he said.
