Serious vandalism at the prehistoric Megalithic Cemetery of Loughcrew that has caused significant damage was reported today via the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage social media.

The post said: “Stone within one of the passage tombs, some of which are decorated with megalithic art, have been damaged by blunt force and graffiti.”

The damage is said to be a significant case of heritage crime and an offence under the National Monuments Acts.

The site has been inspected by National Monument Service - Archaeology and OPW. The post stated that the matter is under investigation by An Gardai Siochana.
