Man accused of unlawful killing of teenager in Navan

A 36-year-old man from Navan appeared on a new charge in court on Tuesday concerning an incident on Watergate Street in the town in June.

Arturas Mauruca, who has an address at Cluain Adain Rise, Clonmagadden was charged with unlawful killing (manslaughter) contrary to common law. Detective Conor McCluskey said the accused made no reply when the charge was put to him that morning.

Court Presenter Sergeant Peter Clarke said the new charge would replace one of assault causing harm when the case was called at Trim District Court on Tuesday.

Eighteen-year-old, Mantas Jurkevicius with an address at Kingscourt died following an incident at the Watergate Bar and Kitchen on 21st June last.

Judge Patricia Cronin granted bail on the new charge in the sum of €6,000 with €3,000 to be lodged, subject to conditions that the accused sign on at Navan Garda Station three times per week, surrender his passport, not contact witnesses in the case, not apply for travel documents, notify Gardaí of any change in address and retain his mobile phone number and be contactable at all times.

The Judge struck out the assault causing harm charge and remanded the accused on the new charge to the sitting on 27th October for a book of evidence or a signed plea of guilty.

The Director of Public Prosecutions directed that the matter proceed by trial on indictment which means going before the circuit court.
