Navan retailer praised for support of young worker
A Navan furniture retailer has been recognised for helping transform the life of a local man through its commitment to inclusive employment.
Caffrey's Furniture has received a Praxis Care Community Champion Award in recognition of its support for employee Ronan Connolly, who has developed new skills, confidence and independence since joining the business last year.
The award forms part of Praxis Care's Community Champion programme, launched in 2025 to recognise businesses and organisations that create meaningful opportunities for people with learning disabilities, autism, mental ill health and dementia to participate fully in community life.
Ronan (42), from Navan, who receives support from Praxis Care, joined the Navan-based furniture store in 2024 and has since become a valued member of the team, taking on a range of responsibilities across the business.
His support worker, David Geraghty, who has worked with Ronan for more than five years, said the difference employment had made to his life had been remarkable.
"Ronan has experienced a complete turnaround, and a significant part of this progress can be attributed to his role at Caffrey's," he said.
"He genuinely enjoys going to work, engaging with his colleagues, and has even developed the confidence to interact with members of the public.
"I have seen his independence grow significantly, and it has been a pleasure to witness how far he has come and the positive impact this opportunity has had on his life."
Employment remains a significant challenge for many people with disabilities. According to Praxis Care, the employment rate for disabled people in Ireland is 32.6 per cent, while people with intellectual disabilities continue to face some of the greatest barriers to accessing meaningful work. Tommy Brady, manager of Caffrey's Furniture, said Ronan had become an important part of the team.
"Since Ronan started 16 months ago, we have all got to know and have grown very fond of him," he said.
"We all love to see him coming in. He brightens up the day and we always have a great laugh – he's a very witty character. "We are delighted to be acknowledged as one of Praxis Care's Community Champion Award winners."
The Community Champion programme celebrates employers whose commitment to inclusive workplaces helps create opportunities for people to build confidence, develop independence and play an active role in their communities.
