Man 20s dies in Cavan river drowning

Emergency personnel attempted to revive the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 28-year-old man has died following a tragic drowning incident near Ballyhaise, Co Cavan, late yesterday evening.

The man is understood to have fallen into the Annalee River while fishing at around 8.30pm on Tuesday, August 11.

A major emergency response was subsequently launched, involving Cavan Town Fire Brigade, An Garda Síochána and the National Ambulance Service. Garda Air Support and a local fire service unit also attended the scene.

Emergency personnel attempted to revive the man after his body was recovered from the water, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The man is understood to be from the local area.

A spokesperson for An Garda Siochaná confirmed that emergency services responded after receiving reports of a person in the water at "Drumaraw, Ballyhaise Co. Cavan shortly at approximately 8:30pm on Tuesday 11th August, 2026. A male, aged in his 20s was taken from the water where he was pronounced deceased."

The spokesperson added: "His body has been removed to Cavan Mortuary where a post-mortem examination will be arranged at Our Lady's National Hospital Navan. A file will be prepared for the Coroner."
