Sean Murray unable to defy odds in 3 Arena, will look to bounce back in September

Sean Murray was not able to upset the odds on Saturday night in the 3 Arena, as the Tankardstown boxer was dealt a defeat in Dublin.

Competing on the undercard of Queensberry Promotion’s ‘No Turning Back Event’, Murray took on the company’s star up-and-comer, John Joe Carrigan, who was priced as big as a 1-100 favourite during the week ahead of their super welterweight clash.

Carrigan is still a fresh professional fighter, as he was tested by Murray in just his fourth professional fight. However, the fighter from Carlisle, England, has proven that he is capable of bringing his incredible amateur form into the big nights.

Murray was considered to be the toughest test that the British prospect had taken on, thanks to his aggressive style and quality. However, Carrigan quickly found his rhythm in the Irish capital.

The Meath brawler was able to nullify shots of significance from Carrigan in the opening two rounds, thanks to disciplined defence and well-timed head movement keeping punches from landing the mark.

Then, in round three, as Murray began to have a more front-footed approach, a short left-hook from Carrigan at the end of a three-punch combination found its way through the guard, putting the Irishman down.

Although the man from Tankardstown beat the count and continued the fight, an immediate barrage of punches from the 19-year-old spelled the end of the night for Murray in the 3 Arena.

Despite being unable to defy the huge odds, Murray was still able to live a dream by fighting in Ireland’s premium boxing venue in a sold-out show at the 3 Arena. Now, he will look to regather himself and move forward, as he is currently scheduled to compete in a bout on September 26th.

Next time out, Murray takes on Belfast’s John Boyd, who currently has an undefeated record of 5-0. The fight will take place in The National Stadium in Dublin, and the Meath man will look to improve on his now 3-6 record.
