Free admission for Meath heritage sites for under 18s throughout August
An initiative aiming to encourage young people and families to discover Ireland’s rich cultural and historical heritage has been announced today by OPW (Office of Public Works) where under 18s will be granted free access to all OPW heritage sites throughout the month of August. With an abundance of places to visit within the Royal County, you won't be short of plans this summer.
For an exciting day out for any history buff, you can visit the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre which is located in a restored eighteenth-century house. The centre contains original weapons and a laser model of the battlefield. It is a treasure trove for anyone who wants to find out more about this pivotal episode in Irish and European history.
Why not take a trip to Trim - Few places in Ireland contain more medieval buildings than the heritage town. Trim Castle is foremost among those buildings. Modern walkways now allow you to look down over the interior of the keep – a chance to appreciate the sheer size and thickness of the mighty castle walls. In fact, the castle is the largest Anglo-Norman fortification in Ireland.
Speaking about the initiative, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kevin “Boxer” Moran, said: “I am delighted that all under 18s will once again enjoy free entry to OPW heritage sites this August. Whether it’s exploring ancient monuments, visiting historic houses, taking part in interactive tours or discovering Ireland’s cultural heritage first-hand, this initiative offers young people a fun and memorable way to connect with history, nature and culture over the summer holidays.”

Young explorers visiting Glebe Gallery can discover the fascinating stories behind one of Ireland’s most beautiful regency houses, where newly conserved spaces mix heritage, art and interactive visitor experiences.
