Rathmolyon man cultivated cannabis

A Rathmolyon man who got off heroin and onto methadone, started cultivating cannabis. Leonard Daly of Church View Rathmoylon thought if he cultivated plants he was less likely to come to attention, Trim District Court heard on Tuesday.

The 46-year-old was before the court charged with possession of €20 worth of cannabis and cultivation of plants with a value of €900 at his address on 9th September last year.

It was stated he had nine previous convictions, including two for possession of drugs. His solicitor explained the defendant was addicted to heroin for over 15 years. He got off heroin and onto methadone.

He started smoking cannabis, and thought he would be less likely to come to attention by cultivating cannabis.

Judge Eirinn McKiernan imposed a two month sentence on the defendant, which she suspended for 12 months. She fixed his bail at €200 and an independent surety of €300 cash to be lodged for appeal.
