Gerry Deegan

National archery position for Athboy man

Gerry Deegan, president of Athboy Archery Club, has taken on a new role as national development officer with Archery Ireland. Gerry previously served six years on the executive committee of the Amateur Archery Associaton, where he held several prominent roles including national children’s officer, vetting officer, manager of the national team and chairperson of three of its sub-committees. He is also a national judge, attending competitive events throughout the twenty six counties.
Over the past five years, Gerry has concentrated on founding and developing Athboy Archery Club, now recognised as one of Ireland’s most vibrant and successful archery clubs. Last year the Athboy club hosted four competitions, two of which were international events, attacting competitors from several European countries. In 2012 it is estimated that archery club events attracted almost 1,000 people to Athboy, contributing greatly to the local economy, with as many as 300 of those seeking accommodation and services in the surrounding areas. Just two weeks ago, Athboy Archery Club hosted the inaugural event of the newly formed National Archery League. This proved to be an enormous success, and will be followed by the Athboy Open Competition in May and the Irish National Championship in August.
