A lot of work done, but more to do for Geraghty
Seanie Geraghty was a key component of Meath’s impressive defensive display in their Christy Ring Cup win over Wicklow. The stalwart Kilskyre/Moylagh man was delighted to come away from the fortress of Aughrim with a comprehensive victory. He also said that last year's defeat did not play a huge role in the preparation for Sunday.
“We would have to be happy with that. I have been coming to Aughrim a long time and it is such a tough place to get a result. We got a nice trimming here last year and if you are not on it they will put you away. We knew after the Kerry loss that every game was going to be a knockout game,” said Geraghty.
“Last year's game wasn’t a huge factor heading into this week. Barry (Hennessy) mentioned it during the week just saying that last year was not good enough. We were miles off them. It was just a reminder of what Wicklow can do if we are not on it, but that is all it was for us in the build-up.”
Meath only conceded seven points from play on Sunday and that was largely down to the intensity and work-rate that Meath’s backs brought to the clash.
The message from Geraghty on Meath’s defensive unit as a whole was clear, a lot of work done, more to do.
“We spoke during the week about how we wanted to defend as a unit. We gave up some cheap frees and Podge (Doyle) nailed us for them. Defensively, since the Kerry game we have improved. We were carved open that day and we have put in a lot of work the last few weeks and we have more to do over the next few weeks.”
Greville concluded by heaping praise on the u-20 panel members who have had a hectic schedule over the last while.
“It is a fierce young group and I have to give credit to the u-20s. They have been double-jobbing for the last two months. Training is really good with them and there is massive competition for places.
There is a savage group there, the energy that those young lads bring is infectious. They just want to go out there and play hurling which is pulling us older lads along,” concluded the experienced full-back who will be hoping that he and his teammates can continue this momentum for the remainder of the Christy Ring Cup.
