Relief as homeless drop-in centre opens doors of new premises in Navan

Navan's only homeless drop-in service officially opened the doors of its new premises yesterday (Monday) just months after its threatened closure.

The new Joshua Community Centre on the third Floor, Kennedy House, Navan, was officially opened by the Mayor of Navan, Cllr Pádraig Fitzsimons, who was joined by Cllr Alan Lawes and Cllr Eddie Fennessy, alongside a wide range of community organisations, agencies, partners and supporters.

The opening represents a major turning point for Joshua Community, whose services were at risk just months earlier when their previous premises faced closure due to redevelopment plans.

At that time, the organisation made a presentation to the Navan Municipal Council seeking support to ensure continuity of essential services for some of the town’s most vulnerable individuals.

Joshua Community, a registered charity operating in Navan since 2020, provides vital supports to people experiencing homelessness, food poverty, addiction, and social isolation. Over the past 12 months alone, the organisation has recorded more than 2,000 visits to its Drop-In service and provided over 500 showers to individuals with no access to basic facilities.

Joshua Community founder, Liam McNamara, highlighted the heart of the organisation’s work, emphasising the importance of life change and the need for continued collaboration across agencies and community partners. Homeless Drop-In coordinator Gary Dawe also addressed those in attendance, speaking about the privilege of serving individuals experiencing homelessness and the importance of providing a consistent, welcoming space within the community.

A particularly moving moment during the event came as two service users shared their experiences of the Drop-In, describing how having somewhere to come, even for something as simple as a shower, has restored a sense of dignity and belonging in their lives.

Head of Operations, Monica Nelson, also spoke about the organisation’s New Beginnings Programme, a 16-week personal development and employability programme supporting individuals to move forward from addiction, homelessness, and long-term unemployment.

In his address, Cllr Fitzsimons reflected on his previous engagement with Joshua Community during their deputation to the Municipal District in late 2025, as well as his attendance at their Christmas Day dinner for homeless service users.

He spoke of the compassion evident within the organisation and the importance of ensuring that those most vulnerable in the community have access to support and care.

Following the official opening, those in attendance were invited to tour the new facility and engage with staff, volunteers, and partner organisations.

As part of the next phase of development, Joshua Community has also announced the launch of its Community Building Appeal, aimed at sustaining the increased costs associated with the new premises. The initiative, launching publicly on 21st April, invites 150 people to commit to contributing €5 per week, helping to ensure the long-term sustainability of the centre and the continuation of its vital services.

Joshua Community continues to work collaboratively with local agencies, partners, and public representatives to strengthen supports across Navan and ensure that those experiencing hardship are met with dignity, care, and opportunity.
