Two-part Shergar documentary to air on Virgin Media

Gripping story of racehorse's kidnap by the IRA

Part one of a gripping new documentary, 'Shergar: The Racehorse and the IRA', premieres tonight (Wednesday 18th March) on Virgin Media PLAY and Virgin Media One, with the second episode landing on Wednesday 25th March.

This two-part docuseries delves into the triumph and mystery at the heart of Shergar’s story – from his breathtaking Derby victory to the decades‑long questions surrounding his disappearance. Told through first‑hand accounts set against a tumultuous political landscape at the time, the series examines how the theft of a single racehorse reverberated far beyond the world of elite horse racing.

Episode one begins with Shergar’s extraordinary rise. Bred by the Aga Khan and trained in Ireland, his power and grace electrified the racing world. His record‑breaking win at the 1981 Epsom Derby transforms him from champion to global phenomenon, eventually leading to his retirement to stud at Ballymany, County Kildare, where he becomes both a multimillion‑pound investment and an international sensation.

However, in February 1983, the story takes a dramatic turn when armed men force their way onto the farm, hold staff at gunpoint, and order head groom James Fitzgerald to load Shergar into a waiting horsebox. Within minutes, the horse who captivated a nation disappears into the night, triggering shock across Ireland and Britain. As ransom demands follow, negotiations unfold amid fear, disbelief, and mounting tension. With no resolution and hope rapidly fading, suspicion increasingly turns toward the Provisional IRA. What begins as a tale of triumph transforms into a chilling mystery, with Shergar’s fate slipping further from reach.

The series also features insight from two of horse racing's most familiar voices. Donn McClean, one of the most respected commentators on Irish and British horse racing, brings decades of analysis and award‑winning journalism to the documentary. Derek Thompson, one of the most recognisable broadcasters in British racing, provides a rare first-hand perspective on the Shergar investigation itself. In 1983, he was flown to Belfast during the kidnapping and became directly involved in attempts to secure the Derby winner’s release, receiving chilling calls from a man using the codename “Arkle.” Their combined insight offers both seasoned context and personal testimony, illuminating the enduring impact of Shergar’s disappearance on the racing world.

Through first-hand testimony and political context, the series traces how a single act of theft cast a long shadow over racing and beyond. Decades later, Shergar remains both a legend and an unresolved mystery.

Episode One airs Wednesday 18 March at 9pm on Virgin Media PLAY and Virgin Media One with episode two following Wednesday 25 March.
