Directed to pay €1,000 to charity on top of €2,000 compensation as a result of his part in an investment scam
A DEFENDANT was directed to pay €1,000 to charity on top of €2,000 compensation as a result of his part in an investment scam. Trim District Court heard that the victim was promised a €200,000 return on a €10,000 investment. She made a €2,000 deposit which was taken from her bank account.
Emmanuel Oweibe, with an address at Bothargas, Louth Village, Louth appeared before the court charged with defrauding the woman.
It was stated that the woman had been contacted through a message on Facebook in relation to a Covid payment.
Barrister James O’Brien said the defendant had no previous convictions and he had a number of letters of apology in court along with €2,000 compensation.
The money was paid into his account and then passed into one of a number of other accounts.
Judge Eirinn McKiernan remarked “this is happening far too often and it’s terrible for the victims.” She put the case back to a date in April for the defendant to pay €1,000 to charity.
