New Year Messages: Major investment in housing, roads, regeneration and community at heart of record €2.6m Budget

As Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council, I want to wish every resident of our county a very Happy New Year. 2025 was a year of progress and ambition, and 2026 promises even more as we work together to make Meath an even better place to live, work, and visit.

Our Budget for 2026 stands at €258.7 million, enabling major investment in housing, roads, regeneration, and community services. We have already surpassed our five-year housing delivery target, with 1,773 new homes completed, including landmark developments in Navan, Clonee, and Ashbourne. This achievement reflects our commitment to tackling housing challenges and providing secure, affordable homes for families across Meath.

Infrastructure remains a top priority. We are investing €1.5 million annually in local roads, alongside targeted safety measures in every Municipal District. Our €10 million regeneration programme will transform towns and villages, tackling vacancy and dereliction while enhancing public spaces. These projects will breathe new life into communities and support local businesses.

Economic development is central to our vision. The Thrive Centre of Business Excellence, opened in September 2025, is already supporting enterprise growth and job creation. With €4.8 million allocated for economic development, we will continue to attract investment and foster innovation.

Tourism and culture will also thrive, with festivals like Púca, Hinterland, and Siamsa Glas showcasing Meath’s unique heritage. As someone from Slane, I am proud that our Boyne Valley heritage and iconic landmarks remain at the heart of Meath’s tourism strategy, drawing visitors from across the globe.

Climate action is embedded in everything we do. In 2026, we will advance our nine Decarbonising Zones, implement the Community Climate Action Programme, and promote sustainable transport through active travel projects. Digital transformation will further improve services, making it easier for residents to engage with the Council.

As we look ahead, our priorities are clear: housing, infrastructure, regeneration, enterprise, climate action, and community well-being. Together, we will build a county that is resilient, inclusive, and ready for the future.

Thank you for your trust and support. Let’s make 2026 a year of progress and pride for County Meath.
