Official opening of second phase of Ashbourne Park

Meath County Council officially opened the second phase of Ashbourne Linear Park, which includes a skatepark, basketball facilities and a new bridge today (Tuesday).

The €1.2million project that forms a vital part of the town's evolving green infrastructure while also providing a fantastic new amenity for local residents.

Funded by Meath County Council, it comprises a state-of-the-art skatepark, a 3x3 basketball court, and a pedestrian footbridge over the Broadmeadow River.

The Phase 2 works also include construction of an access road and car park for ease of access, footpaths throughout the park to include connectivity, in addition to landscaping, planting and other essential site developments including fencing, drainage, and public lighting.

The first phase, completed in 2019, introduced a new play space, an amphitheatre, and a pedestrian footbridge that connected the park directly to Ashbourne’s town centre.

An Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council, Cllr Wayne Harding said: "I was lucky enough back in 2019 to be Cathaoirleach when Phase 1 of Ashbourne Linear Park was opened and have been pleased over the years to see so many people, young and old, enjoying that wonderful facility. I have no doubt Phase 2 will be just as popular with locals.

“With the 3x3 basketball court and particularly with the skate-park, it is brilliant to see the provision of facilities here for a number of physical activities which aren’t normally catered for in Ireland.”

Chief Executive of Meath County Council Kieran Kehoe said: "Earlier this year, we stood just across the road there and officially opened 74 homes at Millrace as part of a county-wide drive that has seen us lead the way nationally in our delivery of social housing.

“However, at Meath County Council, we are acutely aware that providing housing is only part of the equation. We also need to provide the infrastructure and facilities to go with it, and this development is a terrific example of us doing just that,” he said.
