Dunshaughlin lifter claims third at Nationals as silver slips from his grasp
Dunshaughlin's Jack Ryan grinded out third place at the Powerlifting Open Nationals Competition in the 83kg weight class after missing out on second by just two and a half kilogrammes.
After lifting 245kg in squats, 167.5kg in bench, and 277.5kg in deadlifts Jack totalled 690kg and came third place for the second year in a row. He just missed out on second after Barry Furrows barely took second place from him after grinding out a 285.5kg deadlift and totalling 692.5kg. Adam Duane kept a resounding lead over the pack lifting a total 720kg and is expected to stay at the top of his division for the coming years unless he decides to move up in weight.
The best in each weight class, over a hundred of the country’s best lifters, are competing to see who is the best this weekend (15th-16th November) at the Pillo Hotel, Ashbourne. All lifters who compete at Nationals may be considered for selection to compete, but a qualifying total for international competitions will also be required.
Powerlifting is based around three different lifts; barbell back squat, bench press, and deadlift, with strict requirements on how each lift is completed.
The sport has grown considerably in Ireland over recent years from just 364 members in 2019 to 844 members registered this year. The IrishPF are hoping to reach 1000 members which would allow them to register powerlifting as an official sport in Ireland. This has also meant the number of competitions they are hosting or participated has grown considerably, from eight competitions in 2016 to 26 in 2025.
