Trim raffle winner delighted with signed Mel Gibson portrait

Back in August of this year, the 30th anniversary of the iconic Braveheart film was celebrated with actor Mel Gibson returning to the set of the film in Trim. Little did anyone know that this exciting event would lead to a story of heart warming community and Hollywood magic for the town.

There was great excitement in Trim this week as the winner of the much anticipated St Vincent de Paul (SVP) raffle was announced, bringing a heart warming close to a story that began with Hollywood star Mel Gibson’s seal of approval.

Edel Giles from Trim was the lucky winner, taking home the now famous “Braveheart” portrait created by local SVP volunteer and budding artist Magda Zak.

Edel, a lifelong Mel Gibson fan, was thrilled to receive the one-of-a-kind signed artwork, calling it “an unbelievable prize" and something that she will "treasure forever."

The raffle draw took place on 31st October, with the winning ticket pulled by Mary Foley, President of Trim SVP. Staff and volunteers described an electric atmosphere in the shop as the winning name was read out, following weeks of excitement and strong community support.

The striking portrait, depicting Gibson in his iconic Braveheart war paint, first made headlines earlier this year when Gibson himself praised the work and personally signed it. Magda, who had only recently taken up painting, originally created the piece as a shop window display.

The story began when the shop manager Michael suggested a Braveheart-themed window display to mark the blockbuster’s 30th anniversary. With scenes from the Oscar-winning epic filmed in the local area three decades ago, it was the perfect excuse to give passers by a trip down cinematic memory lane.

Manager Michael floated the idea that Magda might paint a scene on the shop window. But the modest volunteer had other ideas. “I just thought a portrait of Mel would be better,” Magda said. “So I gave it a go.”

Word of the painting reached the anniversary event organisers, who arranged a once-in-a-lifetime moment: Magda’s masterpiece would be placed in front of the man himself. And Mel’s reaction? Pure Hollywood.

The star took one look and declared it “brilliant,” lavishing praise on Magda’s talent before signing his name proudly across the canvas.

Speaking after the draw, Mary Foley, Trim SVP President said: “This whole story has been such a joy for everyone involved. From Magda’s incredible talent to the community’s enthusiasm for the raffle, it’s been a real celebration of creativity and kindness.”

The raffle raised a substantial sum, with all proceeds going directly to help people in the local community through the work of SVP Trim.

As for Magda, she’s already back in the shop, brush in hand, proving that sometimes, amazing things can grow from the simplest of volunteer moments.
