From deep sea creatures to out of this world aliens... Doctor Who actor set for Navan visit

Richard Price is no stranger from the small screen, having acted in the likes of Doctor Who, Rings of Power and Peaky Blinders. Now, he is coming to Navan’s second instalment of 'Mini Con' for his first ever Irish appearance.

Richard’s job is far from usual, being a creature character actor on some of the world's biggest Sci-Fi television shows. Richard has played all sorts of weird and wonderful monsters and creatures, from Doctor Who’s Sea Devils to Daleks.

“I’m so excited to be the special guest at Navan’s Comic Con. I’ve never been to Ireland before, so I’m really excited to meet some of the Irish fans of Doctor Who.”

Richard was born and raised in Birmingham in the UK before moving to Paris and then Australia to follow his dreams of becoming an actor.

“I’ve been in film and acting for 27 years. My first job was in Disneyland Paris which was where I found my love of doing creature and monster work. It’s a very niche field.”

Richard has played all sorts of creatures and monsters, from reptilian humanoids to aliens.

“I always wanted to be an actor and I remember my careers advisor in school told me that no one from where I’m from would make it as an actor. I left school and went straight into a professional pantomime audition. I couldn’t be discouraged.”

Richard's first visit on Irish soil will take place this weekend at Navan's Comic Con.

“After working in Disneyland Paris, I got offered some creature roles and that’s when I began to make connections in television.”

Lights, camera, action... Richard being transformed into an unearthly being on set.

Richard has mainly played iconic villains and creatures on Doctor Who, and he never realised how committed the fan-base was to knowing each and every individual character and actor on the show.

“It’s quite cool that people recognise you from playing a creature or a monster where your face isn't even visible. Everyone watches the show for different reasons, whether that be for escapism or just something to brighten up their day. That’s why I try to do as many Comic Cons as possible, because I wouldn’t be where I am today without the fan-base and audience.”

Richard has been working on Doctor Who for 20 years, seeing the show progress and change over that time, but he says that the fans stay committed.

“Last February, Doctor Who had a Children in Need auction and my old Sea Devil costume was being auctioned, so I bought it for nearly £10,000. Now I have it in my house which I think is pretty cool. I won’t ever get another opportunity to own one of my original costumes.”

“I love my job because you get to be someone or something new every day. You’re encased in these costumes and they’re quite physically demanding and difficult to breathe in, but it is all so worth it.

I wish people could see what a day on set is like through my eyes. It’s quite surreal to be playing such iconic characters. There’s only a handful of people in my position, so it feels very special to me.”

Richard will be greeting fans and speaking at Navan Comic Con for Mini-Con Ireland on Sunday 2nd November at the Newgrange Hotel.
