Returned for trial on stealing over €100,000 charge

A 36 year-old man was returned for trial at Trim Circuit Criminal Court this month on a charge of stealing cash totalling €118,343 belonging to a woman.

Jason McGovern (36) with an address at Park Lane, Portarlington, Co Laois, is charged with the offence on numerous dates between 1st June 2022 and 31st March 2024 at various locations within the state.

He appeared before Trim District Court on Tuesday when Detective Garda Robert Smith told the court he served the accused with a copy of the book of evidence.

The Garda said the Director of Public Prosecutions consented to the accused being sent forward for trial or for sentence on a signed plea of guilty.

The accused was cautioned that if he intended to rely on alibi as a defence he must notify the state within 14 days.

Judge Eirinn McKiernan remanded him on bail to the next sitting of the local circuit court on 21st October. She assigned a solicitor and junior counsel to represent him under the legal aid scheme.
