Disappointment for Coscoran at World Athletic final
Portugal's Isaac Nader produced one of shocks of the World Athletics Championships to claim gold in the 1500m with Star of the Sea AC's Andrew Coscoran finishing in 12th place.
In a wide open race the former Meath Athlete of the Year was disappointed with his finish as the race represented a huge opportunity for a medal considering the amount of big guns who didn't qualify for the final and an injury picked up by Olympic champion Josh Kerr half way through.
Coscoran settled in the middle of the pack in the early stages as he tracked Great Britain's Kerr, but when Keer fell back after being spiked on his Achilles, Coscoran's plan suffered a blow as Jake Wightman and Kenyan pair Reynold and Timothy Cheruiyot pulled away.
In a thrilling finish Nader raced up the outside of the leading three to pip Wightman on the line to take gold in a time of 3.34.10, .02 ahead of the Great Britain athlete.
Coscoran finished 12th in a time of 3.35.87 and will compete in the 5,000m later in the week.
"I was a little bit disappointed. I think I was just trying to find a good position up the front and I ended up wasting a bit of energy around the back too much," reflected Coscoran after the race.
"So I just needed to get myself up into a position higher up at the bell, which was too far back. Everyone wants to be there so it's difficult to get there without wasting energy as well so it's just one of those things.
"Usually if you're top five at at the bell with 400 to go you're generally in a good mental position, I couldn't get there and I tried to get there. That's kind of why I kind of failed.
"Usually I have a really good last 100 but I've made a few surges just as people were in the way. I wanted to give it a full crack so I was trying to get up the front.
"I probably could have picked up a few names at the end there if I just said held back a bit later. I was towards the back and then tried to make a few moves and just burnt myself out.
"It's a learning experience I suppose. It's probably one I knew already but it's just sometimes you just can't do anything about it either, unfortunately."
Despite the disappointment of his performance Coscoran can take huge pride of making his first major outdoor final and he was in an elite field in a blue riband event at the World Athletic Championships.
"Yeah that's why it's a little bittersweet. I ran very well to get into the final, so to not really show up as my normal self there, it's a little bit disappointing, but I think as the season has gone I'm pretty happy overall.
"We're getting a lot closer to what I think I'm capable of, we'll get there eventually," concluded the Meath athlete.
