Dunshaughlin support for local cyclist on 4,500km trek from Istanbul to Ireland

A fundraiser event will be held in Dunshaughlin in celebration of two cyclist’s journey across Europe from Istanbul to Ireland.

Nic Connor, and his 16-year-old son, Harris, based in Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath, are almost finished their 4,500km cycling journery from Istanbul all the way to Salthill, Galway.

They have already covered the majority of the distance and arrived in Ireland on Sunday night before passing through Dunshaughlin in the early morning. While on the way they passed through a number of countries including Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Germany, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. Their cycle is planned to finish this Friday by jumping into the sea at Salthill and travelling back home.

This trek was started to raise funds for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) who provide vital emergency medical care in conflict zones and crisis areas around the world.

A fundraiser event will also be taking place on 4th July at 7pm in Dunshaughlin’s Pastoral Centre to celebrate their achievement and raise more funds for MSF. Videos of their travels will be shown, and donations boxes will be there for anyone wanting to help fund the cause.

Organiser of the fundraiser Roisin Blake said “When I heard he was doing this mammoth challenge I felt that he needed a bit more capitalising on what he was doing.”

“While people are good at contributing to a website or to a go fund me, I feel a live fundraising event would be more beneficial and I want them to get as much as possible raised.”

Donations can be made here and Nic and his son Harris’ journey has been documented here.
