Trim Castle to close to visitors for months to facilitate essential electrical upgrade works

Trim Castle will close to visitors from the 1st November 2026 to facilitate essential mechanical and electrical works, including re-wiring of the Castle.

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has said that these essential works are required to support the continued safe operation and long-term protection of the Castle.

In a statement the OPW said it envisaged the works will be completed by end of quarter one 2027.

"Trim Castle is planned to play a prominent role in Ireland's programme for the ‘European Year of the Normans 2027’, which will highlight Ireland's rich Norman heritage and the enduring legacy of the period across the country's historic towns, castles and monuments.

"The OPW is developing a wider programme of activity across its heritage sites as part of the year, and Trim Castle, one of Ireland's most significant Anglo-Norman monuments, will be a flagship location within that programme."

Minister of State for the Office of Public Works, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, said:

“Trim Castle is one of Ireland's most important medieval monuments and is an outstanding example of the Norman heritage that has shaped so much of our historic landscape. The essential works commencing in November are important to ensure that the Castle continues to be safely operated and conserved for future generations. I look forward to returning in Spring 2027 to reopen the Castle as we celebrate the European year of the Normans 2027.

"I am also pleased to see the Trim Castle Visitor Centre project progressing well, with interpretation consultants now appointed and the project moving towards tender stage. I look forward to great progress at Trim Castle in 2027 on all fronts.”

The OPW has also announced that work is progressing on the Trim Castle Visitor Centre project, which will provide a dedicated visitor experience facility at the historic Market House, adjacent to the Castle.

Consultants were appointed in September 2026 to design the interpretation and visitor experience for the new facility. Additionally, the OPW will shortly publish prequalification notices to shortlist contractors for the main construction project. Works are currently envisaged to start in summer 2027.
