Traffic wardens requested to patrol Enfield and deter motorists flouting three-hour parking rules

Constant flouting of the three-hour parking rule in Enfield and the lack of enforcement prompted Trim councillors to request that traffic wardens visit the town to encourage compliance with parking rules.

There are long-standing issues with commuters parking all day from early morning resulting in a shortage of spaces for shoppers and customers of local businesses. While three hour parking is in place, it is not currently policed by traffic wardens.

At last Friday's meeting of Trim Municipal District Council, Cllr Ronan Moore raised the issue saying the company contracted for parking services operates in Kells, Navan and Trim but no one comes to Enfield to enforce the three-hour parking.

Cllr Noel French said it had come up a number of times and they had not yet been successful in getting the wardens out there and asked if they could make progress on this. He also pointed out that there is just one small sign to inform people about three hour parking and said more signs were needed.

Director of Services Des Foley said they could arrange for the traffic wardens to visit and for further visits if necessary.

Cllr Joe Fox commented that the last time they went out there were fines issues all round and there was “murder” in Enfield but said they would have to put up with that and it was a case of”short term pain for long term gain”.

“If they went out three and four times a year, it would put the fear of God into them and they would stop doing it,” he said.

Cllr Moore suggested that if there was a traders group they should get in touch and get the message out there that this is going to happen so people are aware that traffic wardens will be visiting and to encourage people to obey it.

He added that he hoped businesses would be supportive and that the reason it is being done is for them.
