Sean Murray looking to make the most out of first 3 Arena outing

Sean Murray will look to have a victorious outing to Dublin on Saturday (August 1) as he competes on the biggest stage of his professional boxing career in the 3 Arena.

Having made his professional debut in February 2024, Murray has had the majority of his bouts in the Irish capital. However, the man from Tankardstown is relishing the opportunity to fight on the undercard of a Queensberry Promotions event, headlined by a world title fight between Dublin’s Pierce O’Leary and Mark Chamberlain.

Murray, with a record of 3-5, takes on undefeated prospect John Joe Carrigan (3-0) from the UK, and is predicting a knockout victory in front of a packed crowd in Dublin.

The super welterweight currently trains out of Ardee Boxing Club, and said that he has always had an interest in the sport, leading to him getting an opportunity in the Dublin venue which has hosted many world title fights in the past.

“I’ve always been interested in boxing, I always wanted to do it,” Murray said, as he looks to return to winning ways on Saturday.

Despite having had some frustrating results in the past, the Meath man is not letting that deter him from future success.

“I have a couple of defeats that I know I shouldn’t have lost. Some of them are stupid losses, or the decision didn’t go my way - but I didn’t let it get me down. I just kept moving forward.”

The 3 Arena is a noteworthy venue for Murray after having multiple bouts at the Warehouse at The Red Cow and The National Stadium, but a trip into enemy territory at the start of 2026 gave him some preparation for the big show.

In January, Murray travelled to London to take on highly-regarded British prospect Hassan Azim at the Copperbox Arena. Although his hard-fought and troubling performance against the 8-0 fighter didn’t earn him victory, Murray still enjoyed his trip across the sea.

“It was a great experience going over and fighting in the Copperbox Arena. He was a good fighter, but I’d love to fight him again because I know I could do better. But it was a great experience to fight on a massive show there.”

Now, Murray takes the experience into Saturday, as he takes on another highly regarded British prospect, who is garnering attention after an impressive amateur career. However, the Royal County fighter believes there’s a stark difference when stepping up to the professional game.

“Professional fighting is different from amateur. He seems very equipped for the amateurs, very technical. So I will get to him at some stage in the fight, I will catch him.”

The 3 Arena has hosted notable Irish world champions such as Katie Taylor, Anthony Cacace, and Steve Collins, and now Murray will step inside the squared circle in that very venue.

Murray said, “It’s something that every fighter dreams about if they’re Irish: fighting in the 3 Arena. Thank god I get to knock that off my bucket list… I just love to get in and fight. I love to put on a good show for everyone.”

In the weeks leading up to the bout, Murray said anticipation is a ‘mixture of excitement and nerves’, but pointed out that nervousness was an important part of the game in boxing.

He will also have the advantage of being accompanied by his brother, Rowhan, who helps out with Sean’s nutrition as well as being in his corner on fight nights.

“I have Rowhan inside and outside of my corner - he helps out an awful lot. He does as much as I do to get in the ring.

“It’s amazing, you’re always going to do better when you have your brother in your corner. He’s my best friend at the end of the day, it encourages me an awful lot. I hear him through the whole crowd more than I can hear anyone.”

As well as his brother, Murray expects to have plenty of support on Saturday night which will come from both people who are travelling to the capital to cheer him on, and boxing fans he is yet to introduce himself to, as he believes they will get behind their fellow Irishman who is taking on a British up-and-comer.

Murray’s super welterweight affair will be streamed live on DAZN this weekend as he is looking to earn victory on what could be the biggest night of his career against Carrigan.
