'I can hear children playing and laughing and it is wonderful'
The new Longwood Playground was officially opened last Thursday following years of campaigning and controversy over its location.
The project, which involved an investment of €280,000, was officially opened by the Cathaoirleach of the Trim Municipal District (MD), Cllr Ronan Moore.
Proposals for the playground divided the community last year with many supporting the scheme as an essential amenity for the area, while a number of residents opposed the location as it was an important historical site and there was concern it would lead to anti-social behaviour.
Local parent and chairperson of Longwood Playground Committee, Laura Ryder, said; "The path to this playground was long and more challenging than we ever expected, but seeing the joy the playground brings to children every day makes the effort that was required to get to this point more than worth it.
"I live next to the playground. Every time I step outside my back door I can hear the sound of children playing and laughing and it is wonderful.
"Children get to not only play with their friends here, but also meet and learn how to share space with children younger and older than themselves.
"Children are playing, the adults minding the children are chatting and these growing connections can only be a good thing for our village community."
"While we didn't get unanimous support, we want to thank the councillors, council officials and TDs who helped make Longwood playground a reality."
Located on the Longwood Fair Green, the new playground spans approximately 400 square metres and features 19 pieces of play and interactive equipment, creating a modern, inclusive and engaging space for children and families in Longwood and the surrounding area.
The development also included upgraded footpaths, the installation of a new pedestrian crossing with raised traffic calming measures, and improvements to the layout and surfacing of the adjacent car park, enhancing accessibility and safety for all users.
The project was supported by €150,000 in funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, with the remaining balance provided by Meath County Council.
Cathaoirleach of Trim MD, Cllr Ronan Moore, said: “Today, we can see the result of a shared commitment to delivering something truly positive for Longwood—a high-quality, modern playground, thoughtfully designed and safely integrated into the heart of the village.
“This playground is about far more than equipment and surfaces.
It is about giving children a safe and welcoming place to play, creating a focal point for the community, and supporting the continued growth and vibrancy of Longwood.”
Acting Director of Services with responsibility for Rural Regeneration, Majella Farrell, said: “This development reflects the Council’s ongoing commitment to investing in our communities and providing high-quality public amenities that support quality of life and wellbeing. Longwood Playground will be a valuable asset for local families, encouraging outdoor activity and strengthening community life.”
