The players in the green and gold of O’Growney NS, Athboy gave an invaluable lesson in this Div 2 Hurling final at Trim on Friday to anybody who was willing to learn – never give up.

For much of this entertaining encounter it looked like Scoil Bhride, Cannistown were going to win the day. They led most of the way, including at the interval when they were in front, 1-7 to 2-0 but with Dillon Shaw conjuring up an outstanding second-half display for O’Growney NS it was they who won through in the end.

Full of running and determination Shaw hit 2-4, all after the break, with his second goal scored just two minutes before the end of normal time – a score that gave his team the lead for the first time, apart from a brief spell in the opening half. í

After that goal Shaw then pushed on to add two more points in the time remaining and put a seal on his side’s deserved triumph. Shaw was O’Growney’s leading scorer but his team’s cause was also greatly help by the spirit and will power shown by the other players who showed a willingness to graft hard from start to finish.

Players such as Ronan Dullaghan who topped a captivating display with 2-1 while Rhys Shaw also fired to the net in the opening half. This was very much a team effort by the winners if there ever was one.

Tom Dorrigan capped a high-quality display for Cannistown with 1-3 with the impressive Cal Hennessy firing home two goals. The skilful Seamus McKeigue capped a high-energy display with three points with Hugo Shaw and Jonathan Hanley others to score. It looked like it was all going to be enough for Cannistown but their fired-up opponents had other ideas.
