MEATH PRIMARY SCHOOLS FINALS: Fletcher inspires Kilmessan to reclaim camogie crown
Kilmessan NS 3-3
St Mary’s NS 2-1
In what transpired to be a low-scoring but intriguing contest, Kilmessan came out on top of St Mary’s in the Div 1 Camogie final to complete a hurling and camogie double at Trim on Friday. Both sets of defenders did very well to limit their opposing attackers but the most impressive performance from that perspective came from Kilmessan’s Lucy Fletcher.
Kilmessan’s midfield duo of Toyeebah Daramola and Aoife Reilly were crucial to their side’s success and up front, Hannah Treacy was particularly impressive in the first-half when she contributed 1-2.
In fact, Treacy stood out early on for Kilmessan at a time when scores were hard to come by. The full forward scored two points in quick succession. In the 15th minute, Treacy then rattled the sliotar to the top right corner of the net.
St Mary’s efforts were mostly spearheaded by their captain, the talented Amy Watters. Watters created several opportunities for the Trim outfit but to no avail.
St Mary’s finally made a breakthrough in the 25th minute, when Watters forced a fantastic save out of Kilmessan netminder Elle-J Murray. However, St Mary’s Emily McGuinness reacted fastest and struck on the rebound for a goal.
That was the last act of the first-half and at the break, Kilmessan led 2-2 to 1-0. Kilmessan started the second-half with intent and within the first minute they dealt a massive blow to Trim’s chances.
After a ball was sent into the danger area, a goalmouth scramble ensued and it appeared that Alex Keena got the final touch. After some consultation between the referee and his umpires the goal was awarded.
Watters tried to get her side back into contention with an effort on goal but her attempt was just a tad high. Aoife Reilly put the game beyond St Mary’s with a long range goal but the Trim side did get a consolation late on when Watters found the back of the net.
