Liam Foley doing what he does best!

Timing is everything for Liam Foley as he targets more World Championship gold

For double world champion Liam Foley, success on the track comes down to one thing: timing.

The Trim AC athlete and member of the Louth/Meath branch of Down Syndrome Ireland is preparing to travel to Sofia, Bulgaria, 13th-20th June, where he will defend his world titles in the 800m and 1500m. Having dominated his events for the past three years, Liam knows that every race brings a new challenge.

Winning his first European race with a new European record in 1500m, 2023 Padua, Italy.

He first learned the importance of race timing at the European Championships in Padua, Italy, in 2023 passing the Italian runner on the finish line. Despite his outstanding fitness and ability, race tactics proved just as important as speed and endurance. The lesson was reinforced again last year in Prague, where competitors closely studied his approach and adapted their own strategies in an effort to match the Irish athlete.

As the reigning world champion and one of the standout performers in international athletics for athletes with Down syndrome, Liam now finds himself in a position few athletes experience. He is no longer chasing the field – the field is chasing him.

Over the past three years, Liam has developed a distinctive racing style and pace that have set him apart from his rivals. His ability to judge a race, control the tempo and deliver when it matters most has helped him secure European and world titles and establish himself as the athlete to beat.

That success has not gone unnoticed. Athletes from other countries now analyse his tactics and attempt to follow his race plans in the hope of improving their own performances. It is a mark of the respect Liam has earned on the international stage and a reflection of the high standards he has consistently set.

As he prepares for the World Championships in Bulgaria, Liam knows that defending his titles will be harder than winning them. Every competitor will be watching closely, looking for an advantage. But with experience, determination and a proven ability to perform under pressure, he will once again take to the start line ready to show why he remains the benchmark in his events.

For Liam Foley, timing is everything – and if he gets it right once again in Sofia, more world championship gold could be heading back to Ireland.
