Comment: ‘Life will continue to present you with plenty of choices and opportunities’

Over 2,500 students in County Meath will sit the Leaving Certificate exams starting today, 3rd June.

It can be a challenging time for households trying to manage the stresses of students and last minute prep for the tests ahead but it's important to all concerned to remember; the Leaving Cert will never define you and won't be an obstacle to you pursuing your dreams.

It can open doors, for sure, having a haul of points can broaden your college horizons but there are so many pathways forward for students now that means while Leaving Cert should be treated as a significant milestone, it's not the be all and end all when it comes to future prospects or plans.

In a message to Leaving and Junior Cert students beginning their exams tomorrow, ASTI President Padraig Curley urged students to aim for a balanced routine in the days and weeks ahead.

“For those of you sitting the Leaving Cert, you have the experience of sitting the Junior Cert State Exams under your belt. Many of you completed oral, project and other practical exams earlier this year.

“All of you – Leaving and Junior Cert student - are on the home stretch and your teachers are very proud of you. Your job now is to look after yourself. A balanced routine with plenty of rest, some exercise, meeting with friends, and time to organise yourself ahead of each exam will serve you well.

“Keep things in perspective. These are just exams, just one aspect of life, and whatever the outcome, life will continue to present you with plenty of choices and opportunities.”

There are many pathways available to you after the Leaving Cert, this is just one step in your life and there is plenty to look forward to. Try to manage your stress and anxieties, take time out when needed."

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Meath East TD and former Mercy Secondary School student sent her good wishes to all those sitting exams this week.

"I just wanted to wish all of our Leaving Cert and Junior Cert students every success as you kick off your exams tomorrow. I know, for all of you, much of the hard work is done at this stage, but I just wanted to say, keep calm, keep focused, and try to get a good night’s sleep tonight. The very best of luck to all of you."

Around 70,000 young people will begin their Leaving Certificate written tests tomorrow, with English Paper 1 first up for most at 9.30am. The exams run until 23 June.

The Meath Chronicle wishes all our 2026 state exam students and their families the very best of luck over the coming weeks!
