CMAT invites American pop star Olivia Rodrigo 'out for a pint' after she covers song
Dunboyne native pop star CMAT woke up stunned yesterday morning to find that American pop star Olivia Rodrigo had covered her song on BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge.
Last August, the Meath singer released her third studio album, 'Euro-Country', which recently took home an Ivor Novello for Best Album.
The 30 year old has been met with success after success following the release of the album, with a mural of her face being unveiled in her home town of Dunboyne and one of the singer's songs going viral on TikTok, gaining worldwide recognition.
Now, CMAT, whose real name is Ciara Mary Alice Thompson, has one of the world's biggest pop stars as a fan.
Yesterday morning, Olivia Rodrigo was on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge to promote her forthcoming album, 'You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love'.
The 23 year old 'Drivers Licence' singer sang one of her own new singles, but also did a cover of 'When A Goodman Cries' by CMAT from her latest album.
Olivia told BBC Radio 1 that: "I really, really love CMAT. I discovered her a few months ago. I just think she's such an incredible and unique songwriter and that nobody else writes songs like her right now. She's just a force with a beautiful voice. I've never met her, so CMAT if you're out there, I hope you like the cover!"
CMAT took to her Instagram account posting a video of herself listening to the cover with the caption: "She sang it better than me so now I'm toast. @Oliviarodrigo pints?"
In the video, CMAT can be seen listening to the cover and exclaiming: "She said Dunboyne, she said Dunboyne!" referencing the lyrics of the song that the singer covered which state CMAT's self-given nickname, 'Dunboyne's Diana'.
Olivia Rodrigo commented on the video CMAT posted saying: "I LITERALLY LOVE YOU SO MUCH," seemingly sparking the beginning of a new friendship.
The two singers have both gained a new fan and friend in each other.
Rodrigo is no stranger to Irish artists, having previously performed a version of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ and later covering Fontaines D.C.’s ‘I Love You‘ at Irish tour stops.
